Founder of the Taiwanese Fine-Brush Landscape Painting School
Liao Wentan, born in 1963 in Taichung, Taiwan, with ancestral roots in Zhao'an, Fujian. His studio name is Green Bamboo Hall, and his style name is Hermit Who Shuns the World. He is the founder of the Taiwanese Fine-Brush Landscape Painting School, skilled in Chinese landscape, Western painting, and sculpture. He began studying painting in childhood, started Chinese ink painting at age twelve, learned Western painting at sixteen, and held his first solo exhibition at twenty. From 1987 he has worked professionally in ink-painting creation and teaching, gradually forming a distinctive fine-brush landscape style.
His work takes Taiwan's mountains and forests as subject matter, builds composition from a mind-created realm, and expresses through traditional brushwork, pursuing a pure Eastern aesthetic. His works have been shown repeatedly at international art fairs and auctions, and are collected by Taiwan's public institutions, art museums around the world, and private collectors.
Liao Wentan has long devoted himself to Chinese ink landscape, oil painting, and sculpture, as well as painting instruction and cultural exchange. His fine-brush landscapes render Taiwan's distinctive landforms and floral-and-bird motifs through meticulous brushwork — texturing, stippling, and washes — with compositions that respect both rule and force; between density and openness, light and shade, they combine traditional grounding with personal character. Beyond his own creation, he has taken part repeatedly in cross-strait cultural and arts exchange activities, promoting interaction between Taiwanese painting and calligraphy and the cultures of Southern Fujian and Bashu.
