Over the years Cuixi has quietly become a cultural address in the hills: the home of the Fujian–Taiwan Culture & Tourism Image Creation Exchange Base (co-awarded by the Xiamen Culture & Tourism Photography Association) and a gathering place for recitation artists, calligraphers and painters, Fujian-cuisine masters and filmmakers.

Liu Tianfu

One of the first Fujian Provincial Master Craftsmen, senior Chinese-cuisine chef and Chinese culinary master; currently director of the Hospitality & Tourism Teaching Office at Zhangzhou Technician College. His master-chef studio, accredited by the Fujian Provincial Department of Human Resources and Social Security, is now based at Cuixi, offering high-end custom Fujian-cuisine banquets cooked in person by the master himself.

Cultural Activity Chronicle

Cuixi Villa keeps hosting cultural exchange events of all kinds, supported by a courtyard venue, a multimedia space and an outdoor terrace — suited to gathering-style salons, small forums, study-and-training programs, art exhibitions and more. Since the "Fujian–Taiwan Culture & Tourism Image Creation Exchange Base" plaque was awarded, cultural activities such as photography field trips, recitation gatherings and calligraphy sketching have been running on a regular basis, built on real visits.

From the Host

As Cuixi's host, I prefer to think of this villa as a warm-hearted "cultural parlour". Here I keep the moments and reflections from hosting each friend of the arts, as well as the people and moments in hillside slow living that are worth pausing for.

Note 1 | Why the mountains need a parlour

Cuixi is first of all a mountain villa you can stay in, but I prefer to treat it as a "cultural parlour". Changtai's mountain breeze, streams and hot springs naturally make people slow down; and a parlour with a courtyard happens to be the perfect place to bring together recitation, calligraphy, Fujian cuisine, old friends and new acquaintances. When guests arrive, they don't just stay a night — they join a conversation in the hills.

Note 2 | Peng Lu recites "To the Oak" in the courtyard

When Peng Lu first visited Cuixi, he didn't choose the hall — he stood in the courtyard and recited "To the Oak". The mountain breeze happened to pass by; his voice was softer than any accompaniment, yet it rose above the sound of the stream. At that moment it struck me that Cuixi has no shortage of fine scenery — what it lacked was a "field" where people are willing to speak and to listen. From then on, I decided to take this parlour seriously.
